The fleur-de-lis is a stylized lily or iris. In French, fleur means "flower", and lis means "lily" or “iris”. The fleur de lis was 1st used by the Bourbon dynasty in France. It is still being used by the French royal family today decorating their royal coat of arms and their flag. The fleur de lis is also still being used in Spain, Italy and throughout Europe as a whole. In 1718, the city of New Orleans was founded in honor of the Regent of France, Philippe, Duke d'Orleans. Philippe was the nephew of King Louis XIV and a member of the Bourbon family line. Historical ties have connected New Orleans to France for over nearly 300 years. As a result of this rich shared history with the French Bourbon family, the fleur de lis can be found all around our city today. The fleur de lis is also the symbol of the New Orleans Saints football team. In 2009, The New Orleans Saints won the Superbowl Championship!
